Welcome to the War on Poverty- Florida Website

 The War on Poverty-Florida (WPF), Inc. is a 501(c)(3) Florida nonprofit organization, committed to the revitalization of minority communities in Florida. Through work in targeted Florida communities, WPF endeavors to help reduce poverty and racial inequality, close the wealth gap and ensure minority voices are heard in major policy debates. Our Assets for Change Initiative is a grassroots approach to provide programs, services and outreach to community residents to increase opportunities for asset accumulation, and community and faith-based organizations to help increase organizational capacity.


War on Poverty-Florida, Miami & Tampa Bay Area Initiatives, Kick off SmartEdge!

During the first quarter of 2008, War on Poverty-Florida (WPF) and GMAC Financial Services entered into an important and strategic partnership to create additional financial education access points and capacity building efforts for local faith-based and community-based organizations. This summer, Miami WPF partnered with The Youth Co-op, Miami Gardens Job Corp and SafeSpace Foundation. Workshops are ongoing and for more information to attend a SmartEdge Train-the-Trainer and Partnership opportunities, contact ahood@waronpoverty.org.

Tampa Bay Area WPF, partnered with Pastor Victor Ramos of the Las Pisadas del Maestro Church to kick off SmartEdge in Pinellas Park.


Jacksonville & Tampa Home Ownership Preservation Clinics

Saturday-June 21, 2008- War on Poverty-Florida (WPF), Senator Anthony Hill, Pastor Landon L. Williams, Sr. of Greater Macedonia Baptist Church and Family Foundations presented the Jacksonville Home Ownership Preservation Clinic. The clinic provided help for over 50 participants in need of foreclosure prevention assistance and access to their lenders. Sponsors included: Bank of America, Country Wide, SunTrust, GMAC, WaMu, Housing Partnerships of NE Florida and Option One.

Saturday-May 31, 2008- WPF Pastor’s Victor and Evelyn Ramos held an area Home Ownership Preservation Clinic in Pinellas Park, Florida. In addition to Homeownership Preservation tips, participants received information directly from HUD, Housing Counselors with Tampa Bay CDC, Neighborhood Housing Services of St. Pete, and lenders including JP Morgan Chase, Wilshire, Wells Fargo, FreddieMac, GMAC and SunTrust.

Miami Family Day Festival- A Great Success!!

Saturday- July 12, 2008- War on Poverty-Florida (WPF) and Community Partners presented: Family Day Festival at Bunche Park in Miami Gardens. The event attracted over 250 people throughout the day and focused on providing a fun environment, while highlighting local community organizations and resources, financial education classes, local community businesses, government services and kid’s activities. WPF Miami Community Board Chair, Karen Moore, said, "Strong Families build strong communities. Family Day is an opportunity for families to reconnect with each other and reconnect to activities which protect personal health, the local environment and financial well being."


Reaching the Next Level: A Business Building Series (Miami Gardens/ Opa Locka)

June 2008, brought an end to the Four-Part Free Business Building Series presented by: War on Poverty-Florida and the Miami Gardens Jaycees and sponsored by: SunTrust and WaMu. The series, Reaching the Next Level, covered topics including: Financing your Small Business, Building a Business Case, Marketing your Business and Financial Records and Bookkeeping for Small Business Owners. The series reached over 48 community-based businesses and 60 participants. New workshops will start again in October 2008. For more information, email ahood@waronpoverty.org.

Saturday- July 26, 2008- War on Poverty-Florida presents the Open Air Market created to promote opportunities for artists and craft designers to sell their work. The market will be located within the Gateway Town Centre- 5000 Norwood Avenue-Jacksonville, Florida 32208.
